Word of God : Coming out of Sinai
(#123 2 Oct 2005)
‘.....Jesus stood and cried, saying, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.’
John 7:37
Like the Israelites of old, in my times of despair, I cried to the Lord, and He has always been faithful
‘And I brought you into a plentiful country...’
Jeremiah 2:7
Yet, often, like the same Israelites of old, when I leave my desert of despair to enter into the land of milk and honey, I do still remember God unlike some, but like most, I stopped following in total obedience.
‘....Where is the Lord that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts.......and of the shadow of death.....’
Jeremiah 2:6
Last Sunday morning, as I was on the way to church, a passing ray of thought managed to pierce through my rather clouded and crowded mind.
If only God could travel with me, like the Israelites of old in their journey out of Egypt; a cloud in the day and a fire at night, a beacon Whom I can see clearly and follow??
Would not life be a breeze and we can always be on cloud nine??
‘And he said unto Him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence’
Exodus 33:14
This verse(Exodus 33:14) was part of the sermon that the pastor shared at the church service that I attended the same last Sunday.
God is indeed precise and prescient. He does not leave us wondering and wandering for too long, when we seek Him with all our heart, all our souls and all our mind.
As a believer and follower of Christ, I have the wonderful opportunity like many children of God, of experiencing so many so called ‘coincidences’ in my life. Last Sunday morning was no exception. To have the thought expanded and expounded upon right after in church was a wonderful assurance that we do not walk alone, but with Christ.
It was no different last week, when He gave me enough materials just when I needed it, to leave me no room in not understanding as to how to deal with the issues swirling through the recesses of my mind at that moment.
If God is right there not just next to me, but truly residing in my inner man, why am I going through my own version of Sinai desert, these past few weeks??
‘....when thou shalt have eaten and be full, then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the home of bondage’
Deuteronomy 6:11-12
In rightful and aggrieved protestations, many a devout and faithful follower of Christ would truly feel aggrieved, for this verse cannot be of application to them.
Yet, the heart of a man is deceitful. We might see with all clarity the guiding light of God, but are we truly following in faithful obedience.
God in my salad days a few weeks back, gave me, on hindsight, a very clear prompting.
I acknowledged it, I have been reminded of it by people He sent and events of my duty to respond.
Yet, like the Israelites of old, who were afraid to enter the promised land, because it was reported to be inhabited by giants, I too dithered.
‘Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is’
Ephesians 5:17
It has been a struggle. It was not because of my disobedience that God has moved me from enjoying the desserts of my walk with God, to entering the searing heat of life’s deserts.
But rather, because of my disobedience, I have not preempted the bubbling seeds of trouble that would have been nipped, if I had just obeyed the Lord, for God sees what we do not see.
. Yet, God still provided, even as I procrastinated. God forgives, even when I find it hard to forgo the desire to lean on myself rather than on Him.
‘Lord lay not this sin to their charge’
Acts 4:60
Today, the smog surrounding my view of God has thankfully dissipated. Sadly, it is often in difficult times, often of our own doing and disobedience, that we begin to learn to be still, and be willing to grasp the loving outstretched hand of Christ.
‘The Lord is good, a strong hand in the day of trouble, and He knoweth them that trust in Him’
Nahum 1:7
God Blesses
