#67a First love, the way we were(2Nov2005)

My walk with God : First love, the way we were
(#126 30th Oct 2005)

‘Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?’
Luke 17:18

Today, in church was one of those moments, when my heart felt this great ache, when a sense of compassion seems to encapsulate my entire inner being, and God and His love is the only thing that matters.

‘Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh.....'
Ecclesiastes 12:1

For many of us, such memories of unfettered and uncluttered love might find its way back into our focus when

- our usually over-exhuberant children are flat on their backs, from a possibly serious illness and we in our concerned but reflective moments, remember the how they were such a great bundle of joy to us when God first brought them into our lives

- our ever loving but often neglected parents, come near to death’s gates and memories flood back of how they have sacrificed so much for us all

- our girlfriend or boyfriend then, but now life long spouse and sparring partner is but a breath away from eternity, we might remember those first tender moments, when we were on cloud nine, deeply in love.

‘Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe’
John 4:48

Many of us have come to know God and became a believer of Christ often in those low tides of our lives, when nothing seems right, until the moment that we experienced the light of God’s love and saving grace.

'......Fear God, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole duty of man'
Ecclesiastes 12:13

God is awesome. I fear Him because He loves me and I do not want to sadden Him by my continued sinfulness.

'Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, all is vanity'
Ecclesiastes 12:8

Yet, often pride and all its lustful brethrens, blinds us and binds us so tightly, that we begin to lose our grip on God’s loving hands.

‘But you have come to Mt Zion and to the city of the Living God, the Heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels……’
Hebrews 12:22

How can I stay true to my first love, God??

To ensure that I do not digress to the way we were, to our sinful selfish ‘Adam’, God showed me 3 clear steps

1. Diligence

I must will myself to stay true to the Lord and His will. My heart and mind must be desirous of always doing as He leads

2. Praise, prayer and His prose

God uses music to speak to our inner being, when words and works can be rendered useless by our own understanding. For praise is the highest expression of our love to God, for worship is an offering.

God knows our every needs. Yet, He loves to communicate with us. Prayers brings us into this spiritual closeness with the Lord. Prayers helps us stay close to the Lord and His will in our lifelong walk with Him

God is the Word, and the Word is God. The Word of God leads, teaches, corrects and minister to us the way the Lord wills. Man does not live on bread and water, but on the Word of God.

3. Trust and obey

I must trust that God my creator knows best, and I must obey in doing as He wills and obey in being still and letting Him do as He wills. It is not about understanding but rather faithful obedience.

The ways things will be in the days ahead in this evil and sinful world is not going to get any prettier than the present mess.

The Bible talks of God’s love for us, and His sadness with men’s continued disobedience and evil.
God will not allow things to stay status quo and He will make things right for that is His promise.
Great is God’s love on those who repent and obey. Yet , great will be the Lord’s wrath on the unrepentant sinful.

‘It may be they will present their supplication before the Lord, and will return every one from his evil way, for great is the anger and the fury that the Lord hath pronounced against the people’
Jeremiah 36:7

‘Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.’
Jeremiah 36:24

Will you ever want to grab both hands of Christ and walk with Him in a relationship that is centred on God?

Many are willing, but are still looking for that momentous moment when they see God perform a miracle for them. God even in the very small things in life is already making His presence and love felt in our lives. Yet, we are often too busy, too tizzy or just plain silly to be able to recognize and acknowledge His presence and grace.

Do we need a life threatening event in our lives to awaken us up from the devil induced stupor in our minds and hearts??

‘….Then I knew that this was the Word of the Lord……’
Jeremiah 32:6-8
